We all have one and in business these days, have you noticed how many professional websites—corporate and creative–now include a page link to “my story” or “our story?” The idea is to make your site more inviting to viewers and potential clients by giving them a sense of who you are as a person or company, what you care about, and how your work or product is created to make it unique.
Most of my copywriter clients don’t realize they actually have a story to tell. But when I talk to them for a while and ask a bunch of questions, most of the time interesting details emerge about their background and creative work that provide the basics for a perfect personalized bio or “my story.” A recent case in point was a client who wanted content created for a new website to launch her new beauty product, a luscious rose serum oil.
She included a photo of the bottle and summarized the facts of the product, its ingredients and price, but nothing else. I asked her how and why she became interested in making this particular type of rose oil, and discovered a fascinating story about how she searched—and ultimately–found the exact rose serum she used. When I asked her how she made it, again more interesting details surfaced and I had all I needed to write an interesting her story page.
Remember, your website is a marketing tool and, as you would a friend, invite people in. Then make it clear how to buy a product or service from your site. Sometimes the problem is a lack of contact information or buyer’s instructions. Other times it’s a matter of bad copywriting or a confusing visual layout.
Best Website Tips:
* Does the description of you, your service or product come alive and really convey something special?
* Have you included testimonials so prospective clients can see who else you’ve worked with? Testimonials should be genuine and include specifics about the type of work you’ve done for other clients and their overall experience of working with you.
* Make it easy for people to connect with you by clearly displaying your contact phone number and email/
* If something’s not right about your site, consider hiring a new website designer or copywriter, as original, well-written content is one of the most important elements of a great website. Consider these tips as well. http://goo.gl/Zz9nv
In short, if your site is anything other than what you think it should be, fix it. Your site is a reflection of you, after all; so make it the best it can be. Create a professional, customer friendly experience and then get ready for more clients!
